Q. If I sign up with The Sauce Lab to produce my product, what are the first steps?
A.

You will send us your recipe together with a kitchen sample.

Q. How do I know that my recipe will be protected and not used by others?
A. As part of the agreement you will sign with The Sauce Lab, we will send you a mutual non-disclosure agreement. We will sign it and you will sign it, and we will agree not to disclose the recipe and keep it confidential.

Q. What does The Sauce Lab do with your kitchen sample?
A. In our kitchen lab, we will do all the testing necessary to make sure your that we can manufacture a commercially viable product from your recipe. That means we can manufacture an acidified, hot filled, shelf stable product that will comply with all required regulations.

Q. After you determine that my product qualifies to be manufactured by The Sauce Lab, what do you do?
A. The Sauce Lab will buy ingredients and make lab batches of your product that we will send to you for approval. Once you approve the lab batch, your product is ready for manufacture.

Q. What do acidified, hot filled and shelf stable mean?
A. Your product needs to have a pH lower than 4.5. When your product is cooked in the kettle, the government requires that it must reach a certain temperature which depends upon the product, but is somewhere around 185 °F. By doing this the product becomes shelf stable and can last on the shelf for an average of 18 months.

Q. Can you tell me more about the manufacturing process?
A.

The Sauce Lab will consult with you on all the following steps.
We will buy all the ingredients necessary to manufacture your products. The product will be cooked in an industrial kettle using a 1,000 - 1,200 pound batch. Tests are done during the cooking process. Once the product is finished cooking it travels through pipes to the filler. At the filler it is tested for temperature and then the jars/bottles are filled. The product moves on a conveyer belt to the capper and then is slowly cooled in a long cooling tunnel. When the product emerges from the cooling tunnel it moves on a conveyor belt to the labeler. The product gets labeled and the jars are packed in cases.

Q. How do I get labels and jars for my product?
A. The Sauce Lab will supply labels for your product and there will be a panel for nutritional facts and a panel for ingredients that The Sauce Lab will produce. On the label you will have space to include a logo for your product, a space for romance copy and a recipe or other information that fits. If you are going to sell your product it will need a UPC or bar code, which is on every product sold in the USA. The Sauce Lab can help you through the process to obtain a UPC code. The Sauce Lab will supply an appropriate jar/bottle for your product.

Q. How much product will you produce?
A. Batch yields can cary from product to product and we will give you a case estimate after we choose a jar/bottle. Salad dressings and salsas are packed 6 to a case. Pasta sauce is packed 12 to a case.

Q. How much does this cost?
A. The Sauce Lab will give you a price that will include everything described in this FAQ except the shipping of your finished product and UPC codes.

Q. What are the details of shipping?
A. The Sauce Lab will arrange shipping. We will obtain the best shipping quote we can find and will handle all the details.

Q. How long will the entire process take?
A. From start to finished product should take approximately 90-120 days.
